Drink Lots of Coffee or Red Bull? You Might Start Hallucinating

posted jan 14 2009, 1:23pm by

Those most at risk have at least seven cups a day or a similar quantity of Red Bull.

There was also more chance of them hearing voices, a Durham University team found.

The findings might be explained by caffeine worsening the effects of stress.

So is it time to rethink that 8th cup of coffee, or are you ready to hang out with some over-caffinated ghosts.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role - Kate Winslet for The Reader

Our Pick - Happy to see Kate Winslet win one (Personally I think she got robbed in 2005 when she didn't win for Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind) although we were not that impressed with her performace in The Reader.  We have gone with Anne Hathaway for her performance in Rachel Getting Married.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role - Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight

Our Pick - As good as Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are in just about everything, Heath Ledger is clearly the winner here.  He took an iconic character, made it his own and created a performance that we couldn't look away from.  He did an amazing job

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role - Penélope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Our Pick - Penelope Cruz was great as the firey psychotic artist and we at the Jolt would have made the same pick.  Although we feel that Marisa Tomei was excellent in The Wrestler and we wouldn't have been upset if she had won instead.

Welcome

Welcome to the Daily Jolt 2.0. It is a step move forward for the Jolt and for RISD by providing a student-run venue for the many conversations that have sprung up in the last 6 months. The main functionality of the site is now centered around a blog that anyone within the community can post to and, coupled with the removal of a measure of anonymity, the Jolt can now truly become a central venue suitable for student discussion. But this cannot happen without your involvement and participation. So please explore the new features and report any bugs you might find and let us know what we can do to make your Jolting experience better.

ESPN's Rick Reilly at the World Series of Beer Pong

posted jan 14 2009, 4:39pm by

Rick Reilly has a great piece up at ESPN.com about this years World Series of Beer Pong.

There is only one place I know that combines tiny balls, plastic cups and vats of beer. Besides Jose Canseco's house, that is.

It's a beer pong tournament. This is a sport that requires a steady hand, faulty hearing and a titanium liver. It's believed that 73% of all tuition money goes toward it.

Beer pong is played on a table slightly smaller than Ping-Pong's, by teams of two. Ten cups, filled about one-third with beer, are set like bowling pins at the ends. As you try to toss or bounce a Ping-Pong ball into the cups on the side opposite yours, opponents jump and yell unspeakables about your mother. If you make it, they must drink it. First team to sink all 10 cups wins. It's very sophisticated.
